I tried it with my belt and my pants. Then again, I've tried a lot of things with my belt and my pants.

I think its because when pulled tight the triangle formed by the pulling point and the two points where the belt meets the earth has a top angle of almost 180 degrees, with such a thin triangle you have to extent the height quite a lot to make much difference to the length of the sides, to make the sides longer by about 1km the top of the triangle has to go up by quite a bit.

180 degrees? I think you will find that we no longer consider the Earth to be flat.
