    u r in a deserted house late at night. inside there is an oil lamp a gas fire and a stove full of wood. u only have 1 match. what do u light 1st?

    Can you place the 2 directly underneath the final 1? This will give you 17 1/2.

    but what's the point of the Gas fire-you don't light gas fires with maches-don't you?...

    I believe they would have a pilot light of some kind. If we are going to be picky, the original problem never stated whether ot not there was any fuel in the gas fire.
