what is 'it'?

just like "red" is "red" and not "blue", "it" is "it" and not "true". therefore the answer is no.

surely there should have been inverted commas around the 'it', to show that the question refers to the word 'it' rather than something defined by the context, of which there was none.

There is no answer. that is the answer. there is nothing specifing wheather or not it is a person place or thing. it isnt specifing anything therefore there is no answer.
