For me it depends on what is going on/being said and if I need to say anything.
Proverbs 12:16 is a good guideline "A fool immediately shows his annoyance, but the shrewd man overlooks an insult".
Sometimes people can offend unintentionally, so its important to try and spot that and not go looking for verbal revenge.

However in matters of life and death ... walk with a sword.. in other words, dont take any nonsense from murderers. Nowadays, have a gun. If your life is threatened shoot the bastards.

The world is full of evil so let the petty things go, but look after your life.
@medullah saidThat line of thought is correct. God did not make Christians to be walked over and abused. But why do you say Im lucky to get out. Here in Trinidad we have legislation currently being written to allow homeowners the right to 'stand your ground'. ie the right to shoot to kill intruders without fear of being prosecuted. For too long murderers have escaped death because of unjust and biased laws.

I don't have a rule of thumb (at least not one that I have verbalized to myself).
