that they were only one variety of such sprouts in our grand Cosmos?

@Arkturos
Or that it might be a simulation.

Or that it might be a simulation.
A simulation of intelligent people behaving badly?

@Arkturos
Think SimCity but on a grander scale.

@DJJ
A lot of science actually supports the idea.

the cosmic identity is a "scientist" wearing horn rim glasses and a white lab coat with a pocket protector
he carries a clipboard and a magnifying glass and a .5mm mechanical pencil
the laboratory is huge and full of industrial shelving holding myriads of trillions of billions of experiments in medium sized petri dishes
one petri dish is labeled "earth"

the scientist is uninterested in the earth petri dish ever since the organisms within developed autonomous intelligence
the cosmic identity makes a notation to increase the speed of the demise of the nearby insignificant star
"dammit' the identity exclaims, "i had hoped to grow them into a serious food source"
"but they got so smart they went and pooped in the cheerios"

the identity relabels the petri dish, "now slated for destruction"
