Is it a random pairing? or is it by rating or ranking?

If it's by rating or ranking, why is there groups with players like David Tebb (2269, 3rd) and meman (2156, 23rd), or Feivel (2179, 16th) and Northern Lad (2170, 17th), or worst ThePO (2244, 4th), In His Name (2182, 15th) and BlackBuck (2093, 34th)?

quite possibly unfair, but that is the nature of random.

I agree for a so called championship it is unfair. I look at some of the groups and though Im a bit happy some of the top competition will be bumped off in the first round it's just not fair having three 2000+ players in the same group while in my group I'm 2100+ and not a signle other player is rated above 1400. Would have been nice to have had atlest a couple players over 1700.

hey nick, thanks for compiling the names for all of the groups.
as for me, alas i was crushed by baca, the number one guy in my group. boo-hoo, no round 2 for me.
