is there a way to make people start playing a tournament? I know there are automatic timeouts for thier move but what about thier initial move? They can sit there as long as they want before ever making their opening move and there is no time limit. Being as we have an option to be emailed tournament startup reminders shouldn't the time start running when the tourney starts...not after the first move.
The first tournament I ever signed up in, over a year ago, is still in the first round. It was a three seven tournament and as the one remaining game in the round is in like the 57th move it should be mathematically impossible for the round to take that long without someone being timed out. So I conclude that this person must have made his first move at least two months after the start date. That seems a little inconsiderate, not to mention it makes a mockery of the timeout system.

If you look at for instance the "The Vikings Medium Split 2006 Band 1, 2, 3 and 4 tournaments which were all listed at the same time for people to join.
Band 1 started 24/2/06 as fully subscribed
Band 2 started 23/2/06 as fully subscribed
Band 3 started 6/3/06 with only 50 entrants
Band 4 still not stated and only 7 entrants to date.
These are 3/14 tournaments so someone who entered Band 3 on say the 23/2/06 knowing there were 35 entrants and then went on holiday on the 1/3/06 for say a month, knowing there was still only say 48 entrants could easily assume that the tournament would not have started, or possibly only just have started whilst on holiday. With 19 days available including the 2 day auto-timeout they would have no problem getting back and making a move in the alloted timeframe.
However, due to the tourney starting a few days after they go away, and if an automatic start was in place, and they had no internet access on holiday, they would come back to find themselves having been timed out in 18 games, with a disatrous effect on their rating.
Auto starting tournaments are, in my opinion, a non starter.
