What is going on that someone would be weeping and gnashing their teeth?

Matthew 8:12
while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Matthew 13:42
and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 13:50
and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 22:13
Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Matthew 24:51
and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25:30
And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Luke 13:27-29English Standard Version (ESV)
27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ 28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God.

What is going on with this torment, how long does it say it lasts?

Revelation 14:9-11English Standard Version (ESV)
9 And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

Revelation 20:15
And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:27
But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

These are mostly Christians who thought that all they need to do is to proclaim that they believe in Christ and they are saved eternally. Their expectations far exceeded reality. naturally they would weep and moan. Those whose expectations are not so high would not need to weep or gnash teeth.

Your passage those who worship the beast. I take it you know who these are. Clearly you know because you have said that all non-Christians are tormented for eternity.

Some are confused, others laugh, but what does Jesus say? Who has ears to hear?

Matthew 13 NIV
36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.

Thought I'd add more of the verse to be completely clear on who is affected.

Jesus makes it clear what will be thrown into the "the blazing furnace":
"...everything that causes sin and all who do evil".
Clearly that includes everyone who continues to commit sin.

Jesus also makes it clear that only the righteous "...will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father".
Clearly the righteous no longer commit sin.

It has been suggested that terms like 'furnace' are just metaphors. And some think that hell MAY not exist.

"For the LORD your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God." (Deuteronomy 4:24).

Do you take this literally?!

Most people are clear on who is affected. Christians like you are not clear and are the ones who live in a fools paradise.

Christ said those who ...causes sin and all who do evil. ... That includes Christians.

Is there any definition of 'hell' in the Bible that is NOT a metaphor, and can be taken literally.....to suggest it is a real, actual place?

You'll see that many refuse to accept many things in scripture that they don't like, and call them metaphors, that doesn't mean they really are. Our likes and dislikes don't change reality.

Do you believe that the dreams of Daniel were about literal things?

Couple of really scary scriptures to go with the others.

Matthew 7:5
You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

1 John 4:20
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

Matthew 5:22
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 7:2
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Self blame, deep regret.
Possibly even the hating of one's self for foolishness of a squandered opportunity.

Relentless love of the self contrary to acceptance of God's love suddenly gives way to hatred of the rebelling self.

Jesus says it applies to workers of iniquity, evildoers, unprofitable servants. Paul says the same thing.

But sonship says it applies to nonChristians.
