An Elephant Gambit with a missed mate (best forgotten!)

  • 20... Bg3f4
Threatens the fork Ng3 in addition to Nc3.
    • 21. Rf1e1 Ne4g3 22. Rh1h2 Ng3xe2
?? Careless move played almost immediately. Fair enough that this wins the rook for a bishop after Rxe2 Bxh2+ but Be3 was mate and would have been a fitting testament to Black's control of the dark squares.
      • 23. Re1xe2 Bf4xh2 24. Kg1xh2 Ra8e8
Now there is a wholesale exchange of pieces which suits black as it increases the value of his material advantage.
        • 25. Re2xe8 Bd7xe8 26. b5 Be8h5 27. a4 Bh5xf3 28. Nd4xf3 Rf6f4 29. c5 Rf4xa4 30. d6 cxd6 31. cxd6 Kg8f8
This is a won ending for Black as the king and rook can easily stop the pawn. White's king is too far away to be of any use.
          • 32. Nf3e5 Ra4xh4 33. Kh2g3 Rh4d4 34. d7 Kf8e7 35. Kg3f3 Rd4xd7
This just reduces the complications and give a position which black can win with almost no risk of loss. With an extra pawn on each wing White's task is hopeless.
            • 36. Ne5xd7 Ke7xd7 37. Kf3e4 Kd7d6 38. Ke4f5 a6 39. bxa6 bxa6 40. Kf5e4 a5 41. Ke4d3 Kd6d5 42. Kd3c3 Kd5e4 43. Kc3d2 Ke4f4 44. Kd2c3
White does not know whether to go to the left or the right...he cannot stop black promoting a pawn.
              • 44... Kf4g3 45. Kc3b3 Kg3xg2 46. Kb3a4 h5
Black demonstrates which pawn he intends to Queen. White resigns.
