Edvīns Ķeņģis is a prominent Latvian chess player, been born on April 12, 1959, in Riga, Latvia. He won the Latvian Chess Championship in 1982, 1984 and 1995. In 1982, he became an International Master and in 1989, he was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE. He participated in eight Chess Olympiads, playing for Latvia and the USSR.


Ķeņģis resides in Switzerland and works as a chess coach. He also takes part in various major chess tournaments across Europe. In 2011, he won a share of first place at the Ani Open, with 6 points out of 9, and in 2012, he shared second place at the Thailand Open.


Ķeņģis has developed extensive expertise in chess opening theory, and is known for his defensive skills and deep understanding of complex positions. His proficiency in various types of endgames is also noticeable. Notably, he rarely uses computer databases during his preparation for matches, relying instead on personal analysis and creativity.
