Ioan-Cristian Chirilă is a Romanian-American chess Grandmaster recognized by the World Chess Federation or Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE).
He was born on August 8, 1991, in Botoșani, Romania. The title of Grandmaster, the highest title in chess, was awarded to him by FIDE in 2012. Chirilă won the Romanian Junior Chess Championship in 2008, representing the country in international competitions, and becoming an International Master by 2010. He moved to the United States in 2011 to attend the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on a chess scholarship. During his UTD career, he helped the team win a few titles including "Final Four" of Chess Championship in 2012, and Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship in 2012 and 2013.
