Ernst Grünfeld was a World distguished Austrian chess player and writer, noted for his contributions to chess opening theory. His highest individual accolade was third place in the World Chess Championship in 1922. He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1950. Known for his groundbreaking work in the development of the chess opening named after him (the Grünfeld Defence), his other notable achievements include first-place finishes in the Vienna tournaments of 1920 and 1921.
