Costică-Ciprian Nanu is a Chess Grandmaster and philosopher from Romania. Having earned his Grandmaster title in 2020, Nanu is known for his impressive performance in the European Chess Championship in 2018, where he defeated four grandmasters.


He got his start in chess at the age of 6 and made rapid progress. By 1999, he won the Bucharest Championship U10 section. In 2004, he transitioned to professional chess with the help of his coach Viorel Iordăchescu.


Apart from being a Grandmaster, Nanu is also a scholar. He has a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of Bucharest and a Master's degree in International Relations and European Integration from the National School of Political Studies and Public Administration. His main area of research in philosophy is the Russian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev.


Besides his achievements, Nanu is also a part of the Bucharest Center for Political Theory, where he is doing his Ph.D. on the topic of the Philosophy of Nikolai Berdyaev. He has written a series of articles focusing on the relation between Gnosticism and Modernity, a topic that is relatively unexplored in Romanian philosophy.
