Ilmārs Starostīts is a Latvian chess grandmaster. Born on February 23, 1982, he initially received the title of International Master in 2001 and then achieved the title of Grandmaster in 2018. He was the 2002 Latvian Champion and was a runner-up in the World Youth Chess Championships the same year.
Starostīts has participated in various chess events. He represented Latvia in the 83rd FIDE Congress in Istanbul 2012, where Latvia was awarded the right to hold the Chess Olympiad in 2018. However, the tournament ended up being held in Batumi, Georgia, due to financial constraints.
In addition to his notable achievements as a player, Starostīts is also an accomplished chess coach, having trained multiple Latvian players who have gained distinction on the international stage.
