Playing the King's pawn Opening

The King's Pawn Opening is one of the two most popular opening moves in chess: 1.e4. ECO codes: B00–B99, C00–C99.

History

The move 1.e4 occupies the centre and opens lines for both the queen and the king's bishop. Bobby Fischer called it "best by test." It is the most popular opening move at all levels of play, leading to Open Games (after 1...e5), Semi-Open Games (after 1...c5, 1...e6, 1...c6, 1...d5, etc.), and various other systems.

Main Lines & Variations

Black's principal responses:

1...e5 – Open Games: Ruy Lopez, Giuoco Piano, Scotch Game, King\'s Gambit, Petrov\'s Defence, Philidor\'s Defence.

1...c5Sicilian Defence, the most popular response at the master level.

1...e6French Defence.

1...c6Caro-Kann Defence.

1...d5Scandinavian Defence.

1...Nf6Alekhine\'s Defence.

1...d6Pirc Defence.

1...g6Modern Defence.

Strategic Themes & Plans

White immediately occupies the centre and frees two pieces (queen and bishop). The move creates direct tactical possibilities from the outset, often leading to sharper, more tactical positions than 1.d4. The main strategic question is whether Black will mirror the central occupation (1...e5) or challenge it asymmetrically (1...c5, 1...e6, etc.).
