The welfare system breeds these solo parents, it breeds dependency on the state, just the way you like it
So if the welfare state is abolished, teenage girls will no longer get pregnant? Hilarious.
Why do you think there were many more orphans 100 years ago? But maybe those orphanages taught children personal responsibility.

Curious sense of humour, you love stats, tell us how many solo mums there were when the domestic purposes benefit was started in NZ and compare that stat to how many there are now, then we'll have a jolly good laugh.

Trying to shift the burden of proof again, are we?

Correlation does not equal causation, about the first thing one should learn when studying statistics.
What about the effect of more single mothers making the problem more visible and politically important, which could lead to an increase in benefits ?
What about the disappearing or at least declining social stigma associated with being a single mother, what effect would that have on the number of single mothers ?
Focusing on a single factor (which probably does have an impact) is a very simplistic way to look at the problem. One must only look at this thread to see that is most likely false as everyone is yelling how Labour's coddling of single mothers lead to the problem, while in actually the problem decreased under Labour. (Unless the numbers changed dramatically between the Feb 10' and Aug 10' publications)

Try some critical thought on this one:
Can't feed em, don't breed em.
A noble idea indeed, however, the reality is that they can feed them as long as the government is willing to squander public money with the whole panoply of welfare programs.
