I had never even heard of the show until news of the caveman with the Taliban beard shooting off his mouth hit the big time.

Yes me too, we thought it was an animated show about ducks. And the PR gets A&E and the DD people a net +$$ hit out of this with an expanded and more committed fan base. If A&E hadn't suspended him, there would not have been all those petitions.
