I realize very few of you will read this whole article, but its very good and scary. I think the message is "READ YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER". Don't get your news on social media.

Although it is tempting to believe that foreign bogeymen are sowing discord, the reality is far simpler and more tragic: Outrage generates engagement, which algorithmically begets more engagement, and even those who don’t want to shred the fabric of American society are nonetheless encouraged to play by these rules in their effort to call attention to their cause.

@wildgrass saidI'm sorry Wild. Please, there is no way with so little time in our fast world that I can sit back and read (and digest) this, I haven't even heard of a DeResta person.

Can you (without mentioning her) give us the crux of the concept that you are presenting, just on its fact alone?
@averagejoe1 saidAre you kidding joe? You spend hours surfing the internet waves everyday, not including neil cavuto. You have time but choose to do other things. I don't expect you to read the Atlantic, but I think you should replace your current news sources with the local paper.

@averagejoe1 saidLol. Based on almost every one of your posts, your news sources are lying. Joe biden, for example, has talked about afghanistan a lot. But your news sources pretend it doesn't exist.
well, shoot. Thanks anyway.

@averagejoe1 saidI don't know why you are pushing back so hard on the idea that news is biased. It forms the basis of the Republican party at the moment.
Anyway thanks for trying
@wildgrass saidWild. Can we all stipulate that there is ‘news bias’ on both sides? Rest easy. You fellers sure rile easy. Marauder and i are fighting, but we are at least gentlemen.

Some people care about truth.
You don't.
Donald Trump doesn't.
The Republican Party doesn't.
And far-right-wing, knee-jerk news media doesn't.
@averagejoe1 saidThe point of the article is that much of the news is influenced by random people online. They write things that seem provocative online with the expressed intent of gaming the social media algorithms (facebook, twitter etc.)

When these random people (not journalists or writers) succeed at writing a fake article that tricks algorithms into amplifying their message about Dems cancelling christmas or Republicans are all neo-Nazis the news organizations react to that content. The news media are puppets in the misinformation scheme. The real players are randos in their mom's basement.
They just sit there and write hundreds of 6-sentence articles that are made up out of thin air but sound correct so they get the clicky eyeballs.
