US policy towards Iran has been unnecessarily hostile for 40 years, but it is doubtful that anything the US could have done would have prevented such an alliance eventually.

Yes, pragmatic and predictable.

But I disagree that it wasn't within the power of the US to prevent it,
as you say, they have been hostile towards Iran since the Shah was
deposed, that wasn't necessary. In fact, one could argue that America's
support for the Shah led to this moment.
