Any Canadians worried about the USMCA?

Debates

1 edit

On July 1st the US announced it was not going to agree to a renewal of the USMCA trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico. This starts a 10 year countdown on the agreement, but any party can still decide at any time to announce a full withdrawal from the agreement, which starts just a 6 month countdown. Since the US has spent the last year and a half negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with Mexico, it seems likely that as soon as that deal is done, the US will withdraw from the agreement, bringing maximum pressure for negotiations for a bilateral agreement with Canada. I would think this would be a huge topic of discussion but I'm not seeing it discussed much anywhere. Any Canadians worried about this?

@Sleepyguy

Not worried as far as being able to buy products is concerned. We are getting our low cost cheapo products from China.
I've noticed more and more food coming from India or packaged there too.
My tea and pickles seem to come from there now plus other products.

As for business growth and sales and GDP, export and import stuff, ya it could be a problem.

The liberal government funds the cable news and only boomers watch cable news and boomers vote liberal because the news tells them too.

Those boomers come from a time when the news used to be truthful and these boomers are oblivious to the fact that the news is now biased and political.
So right now they are anti American without realizing we absolutely need the USA.

We are technically in a recession, I think the only country to be in one if we are only counting the western way of life countries, USA, France, UK, etc

Canada is also very expensive and businesses get taxed a lot. So business goes to other countries.

My prediction is Canada is about to enter a period of vast poverty.
Some of us want it to get so bad we have to become a territory of the USA to survive.

When that happens, I'm moving to Arizona

I said way back in the 70's we were too dependent on the U.S. even though we had a better relatinship with them then.

We have to build other trading partners as Carney is doing now.

@Very-Rusty

Agreed, we are getting deals with other countries now.

Once Trump is gone, the next president of the USA will work with Canada.
I think Trump just doesn't like Carney or Trump expects Canada to do whatever he says, I dunno.

Trump is a self centered dictator in my opinion. He has his members following him and praising him everytime they open their mouths. Did you ever notice how when talking about himself in the person he will say some one said: Sir, you shouldn't do that. I do it anyway because I can. I wonder how many people actually call him Sir???

Any other President would be better than Trump but he has severed relations with Canada that I believe will take Decades to try and restore. Once Canada makes trades with other Countries they are not going to back out of them because the U.S. have a New President.

No, not at all. Trump and his administration are idiots. This cold war, trade war, with Canada has been going on for decades now. This is nothing new.
One year it's chicken, fruits, vegetables; next year it's Pork, Wheat, fish, etc.

@KingDavid403

You're not Canadian.

@Very-Rusty

Canada needs the USA more than the other way around.

Cutting off the USA is possible but costs will go up. Making deals with countries on the other side of the planet have extra costs due to shipping distances.

We both need each other regardless of people not liking Trump.
Also, Canada had it good for decades and now the USA wants a better deal. We can't hate them for wanting a fairer cut of the deals.

We had tariffs on the USA since before I was born in the 1970's
Now we're mad when the USA returns the favor 😄

Trump wants everything HIS WAY....He always has. He was the one that made up the Mexico U.S. Canada Trade agreement to start with last time he was President, then says it is no good.

U.S need us just as much but once we start trading with other countries, trade will never be the same his Tariff's were a money grab that back fired and his own people are also paying the price of it.

He was the Predident of Peace and started a war with Iran, he wants their oil just that simple!

Right, but I think it's not just that costs will go up, but that investment in Canada from companies that want to sell their products into the US market might dry up, tanking jobs and industry.

I just watched an interview of Pete Hoekstra conducted by a couple of Canadian talking heads and took note of their condescending attitude toward him, as if they have no idea that the US buys about 75% of everything they export.

@Sleepyguy

Agreed.

We need the USA but half the population up here would rather deal with bad times and jobs lost than please Trump.

I don't have any stake in the game but Canada is definitely headed towards worse times due to stubbornness.

The benefits of poverty 😄 nothing affects my empty bank account.

USMCA was a way to get rid of NAFTA. Now the US will get rid of the USMCA in favor of bilateral trade agreements. Mexico sees what's coming and is acting accordingly. Canada seems to prefer talking smack and doing nothing to prepare. It's weird.

That is probably due to the fact that Trump changes his mind quicker than the weather changes!!! I believe Canada know exactly what they are doing, Trump on the other hand seems to be losing it.
