Nah, don't buy into the argument that says we need to spend spend spend as consumers.

Most economists have said americans, in particular, actually need to SAVE more than they are now. You can't save if you keep spending.
The important thing is for people to stop spending money they don't actually have. When you max out all your credit cards, you end up spending LESS of your lifetime's earnings on the things you want, because a pretty nice chunk of your earnings gets wasted on interest rates and other fees - and you end up with all that stress that goes with having to pay off debts.

well if you are in a low income tax bracket then suck it up. Even a 5% tax hike in the lowest bracket amounts to only a few bux/day.

Stay outta the coffee shop, or only buy 1 pint at the pub instead of 2.

Regardless, Obama said he isn't raising taxes for your income bracket so stop crying about milk that won't even be spilled.
i'm in the high-income tax bracket. but what do i need a 40-inch TV for?

maybe someday i'll get a projector TV.

i don't really expect ever to become rich according to the new dot-com income levels, barring a lucky lottery ticket. i don't have an MBA or any kind of business degree.

but every year, i get a big tax bite. i can FEEL that.

and another thing. rich people are in control of their income. if the government taxes them more, they're not going to feel ...[text shortened]... ple. and the government is going to spend it on benefits for government workers, etc., etc.
rich, like this guy, with a B.A. in history from Pomona College and an MBA from Stanford.

Okay, how would you define them?
That's not relevant here, I'm just saying that depending on the definition of those words, the impact on the economy will vary. Even if you would say "need" is what you need for survival, it could also imply abandoning all forms of luxury but investing in super-safe cars, infrastructure, investing heavily in science, etc.

there is that. hopefully, people have become tempered against all sorts of advertisements and blandishments by the constant drumbeat from madison avenue.

although, what explains Apple's high sales volume?

fresh-faced, apple-cheeked, incognisant teenagers?

Of course it would vary. But any definition of "need" would leave out much of the World's commerce.

Do we 'need' the way the world currently does its business though? Is there a third way? Not the failed fascist attempts at world domination that gave us communism. But a transition away from blinkered consumerism into a more holistic view of the planet and its peoples that require us all as global citizens to acknowledge each others existence and live accordingly?

In the abstract? Sure.

I have no idea how that sort of system would be administered, though.
