The main point of going into Afghanistan was to neutralize AQ's ability to strike at us. Establishing a stable democracy in the country was a secondary goal. Capturing OBL would have been icing on the cake.
So the countless bombs in the UK, France, Spain, Turkey, Philippines, Indonesia, Iraq and so on and so on, have all been a measure of U.S. success and Al Qaeda failure?

No, they have been a measure of the incomplete nature of the US' success (which I suppose is another way of saying limited failure) and of course, of the failings of those countries to deal with the AQ threat (not including Iraq).

Really, now? How many times has AQ successfully attacked the US since 9/11?

Can AQ do it anytime they want to? 0-1
Are USA still trembling in terror of what AQ might do? 0-1
The future is a very long period of time. AQ is still active. They aren't yet erased from the surface of the Earth.

The goal is not to disable them for all time. As you said, that it impossible. The goal is to disable them for as long a time period as possible. So far, no successful attacks on the US.

"Trembling in terror" is a meaningless metaphor that in any case, is untrue. Still angry at AQ? Yes. Still resolute on stopping AQ from attacking us again? Yes. Trembling in terror? Absurd.

Well, I still see signs of a paranoic trembling in USA... USA is more trigger happy as ever.
Okay, give and take. I fold on this. The rest stays.

Here are the FACTS: Days after 9/11 the CIA was in Afghanistan spreading Money around to leaders of the Northern Alliance and the Eastern Alliance in order to get them to fight the Taliban. It was a CIA WAR. The Pentagon had little or no plans for a full invasion before 9/11. The CIA, along with the Eastern and Northern alliances AND approx. 400 US Sec Ops defeated the Taliban with ease. The US Special forces acted as forward observers to laser spot targets that US B52 could attack. The Taliban retreated to Tora Bora where they were surrounded. At this point the Eastern Alliance turned on the US and wouldn't allow Bin to be captured.

Now the US decides to go in with more troops to occupy Afghanistan and train Afghans to fight the Taliban in the future. Why the hell did the US give a rats azz about the Afghans? If we still want Bin's azz it has to be done as a CIA war. Get the hell out of Afghanistan and let them all rot.

GRANNY.

Interesting peace by Richard Cohen this morning. Like myself, Cohen is fairly liberal on social matters but generally a hawk on foreign policy. He certainly supported going into Afghanistan initially to crush the Taliban initially. But now he's starting to realize that there may be simply no point in leaving ground troops there to get shot at ad infinitum. As I ...[text shortened]... and he's reluctant to open himself to criticism for being soft on national security?
the Iraqi oil fields were divided up last week. The contracts have been signed. The mission was a success....

So, now it's time to get out of the region.

Was there ever any doubt what this was all about? Come on.....time to wake up folks.

you're missing the point. Your thread is about the US tiring of afghanistan. I ask you, WHY are they tiring of it NOW.

I pointed out that the Iraq oil field contracts have been signed so there is no reason to keep troops in the region. Staying in afghanistan serves no REAL purpose to the US now. They had to get the troops out of iraq but couldn't move them too far away in case they needed them back. Afghanistan was the perfect place. But now....

They have the oil (along with the brits and japs) so now it's time to get the hell outta Dodge.

Damn Obama and his endless war mongering; getting us into no-win military engagements that only ratchet up the federal deficit and drain us of billions and billions each year, slaughtering countless innocent civilians, engaging in torture and calling it legal, keeping suspected criminals for years without due process...it just goes on and on. Obama should be tried for the war criminal that he is. đŸ˜
