With the advent of concepts such as 'cultural hybridty' and trans- national flows of culture are we at last starting to emancipate ourselves from outmoded jingoism and national borders?

I doubt it.

Notions of cultural hybridity precede the establishment of the nation-state.

It seems to me like many people's attitudes are returning to the isolationism characteristic of the pre-WWII era.

How many times have people on these forums and elsewhere said we should not deal with X because it isn't our business and we should only worry about problems at home? Quite a few, some by Vlad himself. It disturbs me how many people put doing what is safe or easy over doing what is right, and I only see the trend increasing.

Manning the borders, building fences, talk about stronger rounding up of illegal immigrants, wanting to avoid conflicts they are 'not our business' and for that reason alone. I don't see an end of isolationism, I see a relapse.

The problem with sticking one's nose in another person's soup, is that quite often it gets burned.
