Was (and is) the Patriot Act a good idea? Do you think it should be in effect?

I don't know enough about it to make a decision myself. Anyone want to inform and persuade me one way or the other?

yes, and would some one familiar with its contents tell me if it restricts the purchase of firearms or explosive materials in any way?

I think this is at the root of the problem: no one really know
what it entails, which is what makes it so very dangerous.

I seem to recall that the bill, comprising hundreds of pages
was passed very shortly after 9-11. This suggests that either:
a) this massive and detailed document was prepared in the
wake of the confusion and craziness that followed the largest
terrorist attack on our soil; or b) it was ready long beforehand
and was stamped with 'Patriot Act' and distributed in response
to 9-11. I believe the latter.

As for its contents, I seem to recall that it passed both quickly
and with a majority. I cannot believe that, in the aftermath of
this horrible tragedy, each Congressperson and Senator read the
entire thing and understood the implications of the decision. I
think they signed off on it because it said 'Patriot' and no one
wanted to be labeled as 'unPatriotic' after 9-11.

I think it ought to be repealed until the Constitutionality of its
major aims can be reviewed. I don't know if it has any sunset
statutes in it or not.

I believe that most people have not thought through the consequences of this Act to the fundemental everyday rights of US citizens. Undoubtedlty the first duty of the US government is to protect it's own people. But does this mean that agents of the state can do what they like and claim that it is justified in the 'war on terror'? An interesting case in point is hightlighted in this abuse of power.

Last time I bought a car, I had to fill in the Social Security number blank on the form in the sales office. I am not sure how it keeps the nation secure for the government and the sales staff--a fine group of fellows though they may be--to have access to that information.

Not my country, not my problem. I don't care what freedoms or lack thereof Americans have. They've made their bed now they lie in it.

I am really curious what RBHILL, blindfaith101 and KellyJay - and anyone else who is a Bible literalist - have to say about it.

They may well favor it due to the presiden't professed faith. On the other hand, they may oppose it as being the 'mark of the beast' prophesied in the Bible.

Or they may just go off on an insane mispelled tangent. Who knows with them.

You misspelled "mispelled". 🙂

Sorry man, I couldn't resist.

As for your post, You're probably right.

The problem is Republicans seem to be backing Bush at all costs. No matter what he does or doesn't do they stand by their man. I guess the sheer terror of democrats winning an election forces them to crawl in bed and stay there with whoever the republicans nominate. So they'll stand behind the Patriot Act just because their guy's in office. If they criticize the Act, they criticize the men behind it. And "most" republican voters seem unable to do that.

Should it not be "an insane misspelt tangent" anyway...

[EDIT] ...come to think of it I believe both would be correct...
