who were more to blame? the players or the fans?

in this case, artest should not have gone into the crowd when he got hit with that drink. that was inexcusable. however, the fan shouldn't have thrown it in the first place. i hope he got a nice bloody nose at least.

Call that a fight? wouldn't even qualify as a scuffle at a hockey match.
Though assaulting members of the crowd was very unwise, whatever the provocation... I foresee multi-million dollar lawsuits...with all the money ending up in the pockets of lawyers!

i've never seen a fan fight a player at a hockey game like what happened in Detoit, unless you count Junior C games in my home town.

That'll never happen. Alcohol sales are the PRIMARY cash cow of sports, outshining even ticket revenue for the most part (due to magazine, brochure, and program advertising). Further, there's no way that alcohol sales at a sporting event would be banned in just one city...law doesn't operate that way. It would have to be a nationwide thing, since the products are sold across the USA. Look at the woman who died in Boston after the celebration/riot. That was largely alcohol-induced, judging by arrest reports, yet there's no plan to curb alcohol sales at Boston sporting events.

And if that happened, say good-bye to corporate sponsorship. Do you think the namesakes of Coors Field and Busch Stadium (among others) would tolerate the bannination (thanks for the word, StrongBad) of their products?

Not a soccer fan but I'm sure there aren't alcohol sales at British stadiums unless you're in the corporate areas. Then again most teams are mired in debt. I think this is more to do with the ridiculous salaries the players receive than the loss of alcohol revenue.

they could just stop serving at halftime. that's what they do at most venues.

Actually, in the USA, alcohol stops being served at the following times:

Baseball: After the seventh inning
Football: After the third quarter
Basketball: After the third quarter

I've never attended an NHL game, so I don't know when they stop serving. I would guess that it's after the second period.

I really don't think cutting off alcohol sales after halftime would solve the problem...it would make it worse. Knowing that the cut -off for liquor is curtailed, people will drink more liquor much more quickly, and be more intoxicated than they are currently going into a fourth quarter. It would also stimulate smuggling of liquor into arenas.

Believe me, I know. 😀

Football: After the third quarter

i thought that was the case too but a couple weeks ago at orchard park they stoppped serving at the start of the third quarter

NHL: in toronto, they stop serving at 9 p.m. which works out to be around the start of the third period.

It would also stimulate smuggling of liquor into arenas.

if you've got a better idea to avoid the $12 a pint price tag, I'd like to hear it. 😉

Hide 6 cans under your shirt and when security stops you just say you're working on your six pack

I see it as a sign of the times. The hip-hop movement seems to be a mirror of our larger world view.

The problem is that we are incapable of distinguishing being "dissed" and being laughed at. So sad.

So much hate. So little time.

I wonder what has brought this world to the state it is at now?

I don't have any real ideas. Just the observations that you have all heard me spouting about "chimp credits" and the overpowering need for recognition and dominance that we all feel. To be something. Even if it's not particularly a "good" something. "Don't diss me!" seems to portray a demand for credits based on... what?

On some mysterious machoness and demand for "chimp credits" that is just magically oozed from glands. Not earned as Albert Sweitzer earned them.

I call it the MTV transformation to Wrestling. You at first have no clue, then you are paying money to watch it. Like picking a scab and watching puss drip on the people below you watching an opera.

Oh well. It will get much worse before it gets better. If it does. That is the price we pay for allowing "everything". Except decency and patriotism. Women and children first. If you value civilization.
