If someone insults you, and you punch them because of it, you're in violation of American ideals.

You could club baby seals in a Japanese boat, in exchange for meal and bed.

You would be here in 2 or 3 weeks (departing from the East coast, of course)

Correct -- in America, contrary to what lawyers, teachers, college professors and writers of government employee handbooks think, you do not possess a right "to not be offended."

I don't know about ideals, but it's certainly against the law ( sticks and stones concept), unless the person is in your face and you fear bodily harm, you May then throw a preemptive strike. You must mitigate damages though.

If P (I punch a dude for insulting me verbally) then V (I'm violating American ideals).

I don't know... How about a little reasoning to help me get from A to B (or P to V)?

I would also like to cite precident in favor of Idealistic American Violence:

See Keith v. Bin Laden:

"you’ll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
`Cause we`ll put a boot in your ass
It`s the American way"

At this point, no one has given any reason for why violence is an unAmerican response to verbal insults. I'm a pretty simple guy, and I can't put the pieces together on my own.

1) physical violence => boot in the ace = American

2) verbal abuse => boot in the ace = unAmerican

I understand 1, but why 2? Currently, my view is that violence in response to verbal insults is as American as anything else because I have been given no reason to think otherwise.

Actually, that's pretty recent. Brawling over insults used to be an acceptable American pastime. Ah, the good ol' days!

The notion has some appeal:

1) Being polite is your ticket into society. Without that ticket, no one has much interest in protecting you -- so you better fight well if you want to insult others gratuitously.

2) Verbal abuse IS abuse and should not be tolerated any more than physical abuse. One way to discourage abuse is to force the abuser to experience similar ill effects.

But the race has become less hardy than of old...

Unless it's about football teams, insults don't really matter...

If you consider the laws of the land to be Americans Idealism, then yes it is against American ideals. I'm sure most every country has the same ideal.
