I wouldn't put too much stock in the first study since all the states clustered at the top are "has-been" states. Just today in USA Today:

http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=15338

there was a wonderful article about how the West and the South are taking jobs away from California and the Northeast. I guess those people back East and in the People's Republic of California can't be too smart if they hemorrhaged 1,500 workers a day in 2006? In addition to the loss of human capital, there will be a seismic shift in Congressional seats to the "stupid states." Tough luck to all you libs back East.

Also, there's a big flaw in the second study: The study group is self selecting. What about all the people who did not take the SAT or ACT? Their IQ's are not measured, nor included in the sample.

Also, I've seen a study that showed that those districts which voted for the Goracle in 2000 also consumed the most pornography, which is pretty funny considering how dickless Democrats are when it comes to national defense.

The south is taking jobs from the north for 2 reasons:

1..cheaper labour (ie, non-unionized)

2...bigger state tax breaks for the company

So, it's not so much a question of "smarts" but rather economics, wouldn't you say?

It's a question of we have too many people in the coastal cities and we need you guys in the rural areas to take up the slack. We can't make ALL the money you know.

Has been states? The ones on the top generally have higher GSP than the others. There are a number of exceptions though like Florida, Vermont and Texas.

The first poll assumes that it was the higher IQ voters in the blue states that voted Democrat, but in no way provides any information to back that up. All it has is states by color and average IQ with no information at all as to how the data was gathered.

You also missed this bit of info at the bottom of the page. This is the part that makes you look stupid. Really stupid.

"As a regular reader of the "Economist" I can confirm that this table (for the 2000 election) was indeed published in the 'Economist". However, a few issues later on, the 'Economist' published a retraction, saying the data was unable to be verified and possibly a hoax."

That's right, your poll is a confirmed hoax! Lol! Save the hoaxes for your stoner friends.

And here's a linky from that same page.

http://www.isteve.com/Web_Exclusives_Archive-May2004.htm#38115.6465670139

Here's one bit from the linky you ignored.

To give you a sense of why people familiar with IQ testing instantly scoffed at the validity of the hoax data claiming the average IQ in Connecticut was 113 and in Utah was 87, it's important to understand how IQ tests are scored. The mean is typically set at 100 and the standard deviation at 15. This means that Utah's average person would fall 1 and 11/15th standard deviations lower than the average person in Connecticut. Using the Normdist function in Excel, you can easily put this on a percentile basis. This hoax data therefore implies that a Utah resident of average intelligence (50th percentile) would be only at the 4th percentile in Connecticut. The average person in Connecticut (50th percentile) would suddenly be at the 96th percentile if they moved to Utah. Well, that's nonsense.

Looks like the joke's on you!

Edit: Lol! Not only is it bogus, it's also 7 years old!

Now, my above rant does not mean that I don't believe the average IQ in New York or California couldn't higher than Wyoming.

Even then, assuming IQ is the reason for voting Democrat or Republican is or almost a matter of faith really.

It would require you to beleive that the minds of Wall Street and Silicon Valley vote Republican or Democrat in the same precentage as the gangbangers of Harlem or L.A.

A dubious assumption at best.

Did you even look at the second one, idiot?

The data below is the most accurate available, in contrast to the Internet hoax that Democrats are smarter

I KNOW the first one's false, but the real numbers, as shown in the second source, aren't much different. Now take your condescending butt and learn to read.

The reason I included the first one is the excellent analysis at the top which addressed your criticisms. LEARN TO READ!

While you're at it, learn some manners.

In 2004 at least Democrats got twice as much money from Silicon Valley as Republicans.

I definitely lean Democrat more than Republican (mostly for social reasons), but I've gotta agree with Merk at least to the extent that the poll seems misapplied. IQ tests are pretty useless in general. They have some applications of course like identifying very slow learners or highly accelerated ones; however, as a general rule, I'm pretty skeptical about any inferences derived from small deviations in IQ points. So even if one did manage to show that scoring higher on an IQ test tended to lead to voting Democrat, I wouldn't take that to mean that Dem voters are smarter.

Also, isn't there a pretty high correlation between voting Democrat and educational attainment, particularly if one weights institutions by academic reputation? I may be wrong on that, but if that is the case, wouldn't it be easier to make the same point by citing that?

I KNOW the first one's false,

Then why on earth would you post it?

Edit: I already covered your second link in my first post. It assumes that the wealthier people in those states vote Democrat. There's no way to know that.

I really can't see how being a republican or a democrat is going to influence the average American's intelligence.
