@shavixmir saidI have to disagree on that one.
And, my third would be the Mona Lisa.
Incedibly hard to get close to. If you ever go to the Louvre, contact me, and I’ll give you a tip.
I was in the Mona Lisa room. Early - we went early, and by a side door, so there were people there but not a crowd, so we could see the Mona Lisa properly, and not behind three rows of mobile phone flashers. I could study her properly, see all the depth that is in her, and isn't.
The Mona Lisa is fine. It's a good painting. But... it has no character. It's a perfect study of nobody. It's an ideal of a woman, and an ideal of a landscape, but she isn't a living woman and that isn't a lived-in landscape. It didn't do anything for me. It didn't make me want to meet her.
In the same room, on the side wall, was another picture by Leonardo. This was decades ago, and I cannot now remember whether it was The Lady with the Ermine, or La Ferroniere; but it was something like those two. And it had character!
That other painting, it was so entrancing, I wanted to meet her! Mona Lisa, as a person, I never cared for. She looks like someone I'd meet at a party, say "oh, hello", turn around, and forget. Never speak to again. That other Leonardo portrait on the left wall? She doesn't have a character, she is someone! If I met her for real, she could haunt my dreams. Sometimes, she still does. That's a much better painting. That's his masterpiece.
@Shallow-Blue
I have to agree. The Mona Lisa is overrated. The technique is superb, but there are more enticing subjects.
@shavixmir
There’s a Vermeer exhibition on. Largest ever assemblage of his known works, in one place. I’ll go, if tickets are still available.

@shallow-blue saidOf course I agree, all of that is appreciated by the art world, but I am really more into the creativity of it all, the way they did it. How in the hell did they make the paints (egg whites and red pepper?!), and paint which stood he test of time?. Why did Cezanne get obsessed with painting one mountain, over an over again? Each called a masterpiece . What? And remember, each of these guys created something new. Starry Starry Night is seemingly simple, a few silver circles on a blue sky. No big deal. But, why, why is it a big deal? THAT is what is intriguing .

This video explains it better than I could.
Each to their own on this one, obviously.

@shavixmir saidWhen shag doody visits hookers, not only does he have to pay double but he has to get one with an arrow shaved in her bush so he knows where it's at.

@shavixmir thanks for a great thread. It is difficult for me to select A Favorite. All my favorites are from the Impressionist Period.
I will be spending October wandering around Italy and would greatly appreciate suggestions, advice.
@phranny saidAgreed, good thread shag, and good when you slipped in some classic shag doody humour that we could riff off.
