What political/current events magazines do you enjoy reading, and why? Time, Newsweek, Newsmax, The Atlantic, The Economist etc... Which do you think is (are) the best? I'm considering subscribing to one and am looking for feedback. I have a subscription to The Week, and I'm interested in The Economist, except for the price.

The Economist is good. I tend to consume it via its audio version. While I do not always concur with it, it certainly has a level head on its shoulders and delivers its news and analysis with superlative writing.

No, no. Playboy is too conservative and he's a liberal. I'm thinking Hustler.

I concur with FMF on The Economist (though I read the print version). I think it is head and shoulders above Time, Newsweek, and US News & World Report.

I would also vote for the economist. They have very high quality reporting, imo.

Foreign Affairs. They get the real movers and shakers to write on the real geopolitical issues.

It doesn't come out very often though and it's a bit pricey.

The London Review of Books has the occasional gem. This issue has a good example as to why it is worth a look:

The Atlantic is one. The Christian Science Monitor. New York Review of Books.

For left wing magazines, I'm partial to The Nation, Dissent, and In These Times.

For right wing magazines, I like to read Commentary and sometimes the American Spectator. I used to read National Review, but it went downhill after Buckley left.

They're kind of boring actually.

For British politics, corruption, vested interests, local government etc. I used to read Private Eye for years. It's a 'newspaper' that is not all it seems to be.

Also in Britain, two notable magazines with in-depth analysis of current affairs are Prospect (basically centre-left, with occasional right-of-centre articles) and Standpoint (generally right-wing). These are arguably more interesting than the longer established left- and right-wing publications, The New Statesman and The Spectator (though both of those are worth a look too).

I often buy them in airport departure lounges.
