German billionaire Adolf Merckle killed himself the other day after wracking up losses of $535 million in the recent financial crisis. Last year Forbes estimated his wealth to be at $9.2 billion.

The math seems to indicate that he still had a net worth of $8.665 billion. I fail to see why this would drive anyone to suicide. Even if he lost 90% of his wealth he'd still have $920 million. It doesn't make sense to me. I don't think the money was really the issue. I think he just got tired of having 'Adolf' for a name.

Many rich people are spoiled. Anything that disrupts there sheltered world is a major blow to them. Most people would shrug this loss off and try a little harder. I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but this guy was just a whimp. :'(

Goes to show that suicidal thoughts can strike anyone, no matter their circumstances.

Apparently this guy had speculated so much with his money he was actually in debt... Your greed must be limitless if you go as far as risking all you have for more even if you have more than you could reasonably spend.

So often we look for a narrative to explain these things - or project ourselves onto another's circumstances, when really the crux of a story like this is probably clinical depression or bipolarism. The fact that he was a billionaire was most likely totally irrelevant. Such is our continuing, collective inability (for the most part) to process the reality - the causes and the impact - of serious mental health problems.
