It comes back to the point of where you see yourself vis-a-vis the government. Liberals want to use the power of government to redistribute income and address issues of "social justice." Conservatives believe that the people control the government and that our laws should insure that liberty is applied evenly and not just to special interests or protected and privileged classes.
The definition of 'conservative' means to conserve the status quo. So, to extend hitherto unrecognized
rights (like the right for any two people to marry) are proposed, they 'conservatives' reject this
on the basis of preëxisting precedent, not an examination of rights. Indeed, the conservatives
strive to make a privileged class of themselves with one of the fundamental tenants of their
party being: anyone who disagrees with me ought to be mocked and quashed.
