The simple version is that Mbeki's efforts to manipulate the judicial process around the corruption charges facing Jacob Zuma, pegged to succeed Mbeki, were exposed, and Mbeki was asked to step down.

Does this mean that Zuma will now be able to do it himself or you see this as a positive move?

He has been doing it himself. The judiciary was 'anti-revolutionary' until last week, when it ruled in his favour on a technicality. He flip-flops like McCain, actually. And his supporters are no brighter than the average US voter.

A positive outcome would be for the ideological split within the ANC (read "The fall of Thabo Mbeki" on the page I linked to for more details) to develop into a full-blown schism, complete with extra opposition party. What's killing South Africa is too much ANC.

But to answer your question properly -- Mbeki getting the hoof is positive overall. Apart from everything else, his love affair with Mugabe was just too much to swallow.

Agreed. 100% correct....

But will this happen, or will the ANC supporters just flock to the 'new messiah' ?

Judging by my experience as a South African living in South Africa I'm a bit sceptic or should I say carefully optimistic.

Lets hope for the best.

It's hard to imagine Zuma will do anything positive for the economy, though. Isn't he a staunch socialist? Is he going to start repossessing farms?

What he says depends on who's listening.

Much like you running around your house naked and posing with your shiny Taurus, Zuma is definitely also an idiot.

Unfortunately the average ANC supporter is poor, uneducated and jaded about his/her future, so anyone preaching 'revolution' will get their votes - no matter their track record.

Political parties in SA are just too racially divided to unite the whole population.

If you like the idiot populism as championed by the likes of Reagan and Bush then I'm sure Zuma's just fine.

If you like the only difference between the USA and the RSA (Republic of South Africa), is Reagan and Bush had a first class economy to run down. But if American's dont wake up and allow 4 more years of the same MacPain, then I would not be surprised if the US economy starts resembling that of a developing third world nation. Given enough debt any nation can be lumbered into being a banana republic.

PS. For all those living in North America:- Avoid the rush and enrol in tourism training college now and get your welcome mat ready in anticipation of your dollar collapsing.
