Mandelson sacked as US ambassador
Peter Mandelson has been withdrawn as ambassador with immediate effect, following allegations about his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Stephen Doughty, the Foreign Office minister, has told the Commons that Mandelson has been sacked.
He told MPs in the last few moments: "In light of additional information in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the prime minister has asked the foreign secretary to withdraw him as ambassador to the United States.
"The emails show that the depth and extent of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment."
He added that one of the key turning points was "Mandelson's suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein's first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged".
This view was "new information", Doughty said, and "in light of that", he has been withdrawn.
Reversal of policy from the PM
At PMQs yesterday, Sir Keir Starmer insisted that the ambassador had his full confidence and had undergone thorough vetting procedures in the lead up to being appointed to the top job.
But the PM refused to say what exactly he was aware of in terms of Mandelson's relationship with Epstein.
Mandelson has denied any wrong doing. He has been contacted for a comment.

Why can't US do the same if Trump also named?
Calls to sack US Ambassador Mandelson as Epstein's eye-popping 'birthday book' gives up its secrets - including Trump's 'lewd message'
On Monday night, Democrats in Congress released a ten-page greeting handwritten by Lord Mandelson as part of a 238-page photobook compiled for Epstein's 50th birthday in 2003 by his on-off girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.
The 'birthday book' features lewd messages from friends and associates of the billionaire US paedophile, apparently including Bill Clinton, Mr Trump – who claims it is fake – and an unnamed bikini-clad 'assistant' of Epstein who claims she met Prince Andrew and sat on the Queen's throne in Buckingham Palace.

Let me ax you a question…
Could it be this material could have been manipulated?
@Mott-The-Hoople saidFor you, whomever Trump picks is proof Trump is a really great leader. For us, not so much. You bitch about the ambassador but I bet you would be FUMING if the attacks were all of a sudden focused on Trump, like the birthday card episode, a signature clearly Trump, near identical with several other Donald's showing up. Including one where Trump signed a note with Donald to Stephen Colbert and it looks like a carbon copy.

If only American politicians and appointees would act with similar decorum. {sigh}
