Yes, you stated it better than me. What I was trying to say was indeed cronyism.

Lets look at some of the potential impacts of this carbon credit idea.

- Motorsports. What would a race car driver have to do to support his sport? Motorcycle, rallye, formula...these sports use a lot of our resources, just to entertain us.

- Film industry. Speak ...[text shortened]... ttages, a couple cows, and a garden? Would this be the goal of a zero carbon footprint society?
Motorsports are an idiotic, dangerous sport anyway. I'm not going to force adults not to participate in them when it's only their own lives and safety they're risking, but if they're polluting the environment as well, I see no problem with banning them until non-polluting vehicles are invented.

Films? Maybe we'll have to do without until they're able to generate electricity without polluting the environment, or maybe they don't cause enough of a problem, at least if they're mitigated somehow.

Football night games? Trivial, because we can watch day games instead.

Vacations? These will be affected to a degree, certainly, but it's a necessary sacrifice.

motorsport is not as bad as golf, its a ridiculous waste of time hitting a ball around a piece of land on which valuable water is being wasted. meanwhile, that land is being wasted because it should be producing food. at least motorsport is where technology is developed and later feeds through to ordinary cars in the form of handling and fuel improvements as well as safety and arerodynamics. i reckon we should all be sitting on exercise machines which power TVs. do you know that suicide on the compost heap is the best thing you personally can do for your planet 😀

"Even more tax on fossil fuels? The tax on petrol is already immense in the UK, the cost is alreeady artificially increased, the government makes increasing amounts from it as the cost of oil rises, further tax hikes on petrol would be extremely unpopular..."

Would carbon ration cards also be ‘extremely unpopular’?

"...there's mounting pressure for Brown to decrease the tax on petrol, increasing it by a large amount would be political suicide...."

Which is more important: Browns personal political career or the future of the planets climate?

"... People are not driving for fun at these costs and these congestion levels, for many people car journeys are the only way to get about their daily business. Something needs to change but constant tax hikes seem the only way our government and others can think of to tackle a problem. Investment in public transport, with cheaper fares more on par with the rest of Europe would get more people out of their cars. Simply taxing them off the roads works to an extent but at what cost? The cost of them not being able to fill up their van so they lose their home and job and end up on unemployment benefit."

Wouldn’t ration cards have the same effect? carbon ration cards would be just a more complicated and indirect way of paying extra for the fuel you use.

i think its great the way things are going now, the labour government have screw-up so badly they are going to have to back off all of the unpopular ideas and try to lower taxes. they have seen the writing on the wall and are running scared. they might even sacrifice mr brown's head 😀
