Picking one magic age couldn't work since maturity happens in stages. This is why there's a minimum age of 35 to become president.

Being old enough to consent to sex doesn't mean you're mature enough to get drunk; being grown enough to drink doesn't mean you can run the country.

Likewise with being old enough to smoke vs. old enough to own semiautomatic guns.
OK, well that will inevitably lead you back the type of incongruity you were originally lamenting about. Enjoy.

My issue is letting young adults own semi-automatic weapons at the same time they're not allowed to obtain licenses for rifles (see the OP).

The state already determined they shouldn't own guns that are *less* dangerous than semis, yet made it legal for young adults to own AK-47s. That's no mere "incongruity", that's outright illogical.

I believe you are confused about the terminology being used in the article.

Rifles in many cases ARE semi-automatic, and the same is true for shotguns. And semi-auto rifles and shotguns are commonly used for hunting. Some people who are anti-gun have a habit of calling semi-auto weapons "assault weapons" or "weapons of war", and then ban them. Then judges have to come along and overturn those laws because banning those commonly owned firearms violates the 2nd amendment. That is all that has happened here.

There is a side issue about a requirement that young adults must have a hunting license in order to purchase rifles and shotguns (semi-auto or otherwise). That requirement was allowed to stand, which I'd agree is illogical.

Good points.

What doesn't make sense is that adults under 21 are prevented from obtaining hunting licenses, or from buying alcohol for that matter. They are either adults or they are not.

And it's SEMI-automatic weapons, BTW.
I remember the vietnam war very well and this particular issue. They could draft you, give you a rifle and tell you to go fight a war, but the 17-21 year olds could not vote or buy a beer in society. make sense?

Voting and drinking age dropped to 18 on Jan 1, 1972 (I *think*). Eventually the drinking age went back up.

Yawn.

SEW me, Mutt.

Semi-Auto rifles and shotguns have always been allowed for 18+ year old citizens to purchase.
When they turn 21, they can buy semi-auto pistols too.
This isn't something new.
