Today, the basic undergraduate fees at University of California schools are more than $10,000 a year, and up to $4,200 at Cal State campuses. Now, the regents of both university systems are calling for significant fee increases for next year, driving the cost of a college education even higher.

...

That’s because both university systems are operating in the red. UC’s budget deficit this year alone is more than $1 billion. Lurking behind the operating shortage is the gorilla that menaces most government entities — unfunded pension liabilities for soon-to-retire employees. In UC’s case, that liability is more than $21 billion.

...

While they consider fees and tuition increases, Cal State and UC officials might also take time to look at the higher education model used by California’s community colleges, where the mission is simple — to educate as many people as possible, at the lowest possible cost.

Yep. Get rid of poverty and the teachers unions.

May I also suggest world peace while we are at it? 😵
Sure get rid of teachers' unions so we can beat them up without repercussions.

The logic escapes me but the solution to so many educational problems seems to be punitive and harsh - sack the teachers, close the schools, in some cases probably shoot the kids while you're at it.

Teachers need unions not to avoid being accountable but to ensure that the human beings with that chosen profession remain entitled to due process. Quite what motivates them to teach seems to be a mystery to many people but I am sure they did not go into teaching in order to avoid being sacked. Think about that.

If you want to improve education, get rid of idiot politicans and idiot judges. You can only work in the envioroment you are provided. Politicians and judges are the ones who have decided how things are.

As for Prop 13, my dad was dead against it. He was a teacher. He grew to love it when he compared his property taxes to those around him. Each year fewer and fewer properties fall under prop 13 protection.
