The genious with the Chinese characters is that more than a billion people can read the same characters, no matter what language they speak. If they don't understand the spoken language, they can always understand the written language, no matter where in China you are. With our alphabet it's not possible.

inside china, a "simplified" character set is used (since the 50's). outside china, the older ("traditional"😉 character set is used. also the older chinese on the mainland still remember the traditional character set.
