Oh wow, that MUST make it true. The Chinese must have loaded the virus in beakers snuck under airline jets so it would spread around the world with the hopes they would be able to take over once everyone was dead.

This can be bunk and it can be a politician trying to deflect blame or just didn't understand what they were hearing. If this is true the statement in the meeting probably came from the SIS, who will have specifically meant that we do not know of any leak, but we do not have information to the contrary - so they can't rule it out. This is a million miles away from being able to rule it in.

The overwhelming probability is that SARS-CoV-2 had an ancestor endemic to a colony of horseshoe bats in China which infected an intermediary, probably pangolins, which infected humans. During that process it mutated and became SARS-CoV-2. The chain of infections is due to encroachment on wild habitats and the illegal trade in pangolins for traditional medical and exotic pet purposes.
It is almost certainly not to do with eating bats, for one thing they don't eat horseshoe bats in China.
