It is also illegal.
I am pleased to hear that and I think it makes sense, being consistent with other intelligent and thoughtful views you express so well on this forum.

I would like to see the US government stop giving taxpayer money to other nations, regardless of whether it is in the form of military aid, or social welfare.

We know what would happen since that is what the US did for a while. See my post above.

It would mean less US made weapons in the hands of the Egyptian military - weapons that are almost exclusively used to kill their own people.

If my country's influence is insufficient to persuade murderous dictators to resign and let their People choose their leaders in free and fair elections, I prefer that it not try to enhance its influence by providing killers more toys to kill with.

If one tenth of the money that the US has spent in the last decade and a half prosecuting illegal wars had been devoted to, say, guaranteeing clean water to the citizens of the developing world, then Americans would be heroes worldwide.

That may be true of every world power in history. What ever happened to keeping out of foreign entanglements. Why can't we just mind our own business?

And the vaunted American 'private sector' evidently has no financial self-interest in 'guaranteeing clean water to the citizens of the developing world'.

And why should they? How about clean water at home?

Our rich folks want unfettered access to the wealth and resources of other people's lands. Can't do that without hired guns. It's cheaper for them to spread the cost around to the People rather than hire mercenaries.

Even a world power needs friends sometimes.
