Over a trillion on the useless F-35 but the US and western world is falling way behind on defensive and offensive cyberwarfare technologies. We're not ready and not willing to invest in it because... bleguhaschoooo. The F-35 is jobs not defense.

American businesses aren’t ready for a war in cyberspace. Although Mr. Biden designated the Department of Homeland Security to lead what he vowed would be a forceful response to any such aggression, this isn’t enough. The D.H.S. doesn’t have the legal authority to order the private sector to follow its lead. More broadly, the federal government, even if warned by companies like Microsoft of incoming cyberattacks, doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure in place to protect American businesses from many of these attacks. If we don’t want to have to worry about Russian hackers contaminating our drinking water every time we turn on the faucet, now is the time to rethink our approach.
@wildgrass saidArticle is behind a paywall so I can't see whose opinion this is but I don't think Ukranian cyberninjas are going to stop the Russian Army.

But don't worry - Anonymous is going after Russia in the cyberworld (lols)
BTW This Russian invasion has caused Germany to consider buying the F35 again:
@athousandyoung saidWhat's Germany going to do with the F-35s? Bomb Russia? What can they do in this conflict that an F-22 or a darn drone can't?

They are jewelry not tools.
@athousandyoung saidRegarding paywall, I posted the most relevant materials. The Western world is not ready. They have already successfully hacked into US utility companies to alter safety standards for sodium hydroxide in drinking water. Luckily this one was thwarted before the water was poisoned, but it's proof that this infrastructure is extremely vulnerable (and would be even more so in a frank war).

We're investing vast fortunes to build fancy airplanes with air conditioning that can take out other airplanes. They're building the infrastructure to poison entire cities with a keystroke.
@wildgrass saidThey have to figure out some way to more than double their defense budget since they have announced they are going to now spend 2% of their GDP on the military.

A costly boondoggle like the F-35 is a perfect way to channel taxpayer cash to defense contractors while pretending to do something useful to stop the non-existent Russian hordes itching to march to the English Channel.

@wildgrass saidAccording to forces.net, there are 13 countries that have ordered the F-35, as expensive that it is.

Wild... it has to have *something* special in the tank, eh? ๐
@earl-of-trumps saidMaybe, certainly some keep saying that they're special. I just don't see it.

Massive cyberattack across Europe today, taking 5,800 wind turbines offline and leaving thousands without internet. Don't know how long that'd take or how expensive it would be using F-35s (billions for sure), but it seems like hackers accomplished it quite easily from their mom's basements.
Probably Russia had nothing to do with it.
@wildgrass saidThe wind turbines switched to autopilot. They didn't go offline.

https://www.pv-magazine.com/2022/03/01/satellite-cyber-attack-paralyzes-11gw-of-german-wind-turbines/
Bertrams initially estimated around 3,000 wind turbines could be affected by the incident. The Handelsblatt article said wind park operator Enercon had reported 5,800 of its turbines, with a total power output of 11 GW, used Euroskypark's communication channels.
German new energy industry body the Bundesverband Neue Energiewirtschaft told pv magazine, however, not many turbines had been affected by the problem and that most systems could fall back on other communications channels. The association said it had no knowledge of photovoltaic systems that might have been affected by the incident.
If communication breaks down, solar and wind plants automatically switch to a kind of “autopilot” operation.
How long were people without internet?

@athousandyoung saidDo you think Germans didn't care about national security before Russia attacked Ukraine?
Germany verified - it has chosen the F35

Isn't it obvious why they switched gears on the F-35 so quickly? The politicians promised to increase military spending, not military readiness. The quickest way to burn money is to buy F-35s.
