God Bless the Brave Allied soldiers who landed on Normandie this day. I've been to Omaha beach and seen the defensive positions the Germans had and all I can say it took a lot of balls to hit that beach that day.
are you suggesting it is debatable?
are you suggesting that the real war had been on the eastern front and was nearly finished?
Originally posted by royalchickenI don't think the Allies ever questioned the courage of the Axis miltary. But, as far as I know, there were no German soldiers actually "on the beach" on D-day.
Roughly twice as many as there were people hitting the beach, I suppose.
EDIT While it's undoubtedly a good thing that the Allies won WWII, I'd imagine it took as many balls per soldier to be on the beach as it was hit.
Originally posted by flexmoreHow do you figure that the war was almost over due to the Eastern Front. If it wasn't for the US sending Russia aid and materials for their factories to the East the war would have ended in Stalingrad for the Russians. It was a two front war that sealed Germany's demise and I'm not going to belittle any of the Allies efforts because it was a team effort. Hell I even give the French credit where credit is due.

Originally posted by flexmoreThe term "took a lot of balls" means that they were brave men who landed on that beach that day.
Hitler has only got one ball,
Göring has two but very small,
Himmler has something similar,
But Goebbels has no balls at all.
(hitler is thought, by some people, to have suffered a groin wound at the battle of the somme in ww1)
The poor soldiers had no choice ,other to do what was told.Yes they did show extreme courage but it was something that they had no control over, just like the ANZACS at Gallipoli, all these poor men were just doing their job.
The allies overcame that beach by sheer numbers ,you only have to look at what they had.
7000 boats
150,000 men

Many (most?) of these guys enlisted, rather than being conscripts. They had a choice.

Originally posted by RedmikeI did say that they were courageous but when you get told to do something in the services you just do it ,many of these men ,if they had the chance would not have signed up to charge up a beach knowing that certain death awaited. These men were prepared to fight for their country and fight they did but many of them would not have known of the circumstances or the plans involved.

My hat goes off to these brave men,who fought with distinction.
