Dear President Obama,
I understand what you're trying to do with this healthcare reform bill. Really, I do. Certainly, something has to be done and I realize that in a town where it might take weeks of haggling to allocate funds to sweep the Capitol floor, it's not easy to get something this monumental passed. Yes, most members of Congress will end up voting on a bill they don't really understand. But, hey, they've got better things to do that work on understanding the healthcare bill, like, oh, I don't know, getting indicted or something.
Still, Mr. President, the one thing I would suggest to you is that you be up front with us. Over the last few weeks, you've told us that your healthcare reform will be budget neutral; i.e., that we can give everyone in America healthcare and make the system work better for all of us without spending extra money. Frankly, Mr. President, I'm having trouble believing that.*
Maybe take a lesson from the RHP boards. Let's say, for example, that, oh..., KazetNagorra, were President of the United States. (After your election, his birth outside the US shouldn't be an issue**). How would he handle it? Would he say "We can give everyone healthcare and no one has to pay a dime?" No.
He'd say: "We need to provide everyone with reasonable healthcare. Will it cost you some? Yes. Suck it up. Fork over the extra couple of thou per year. We need it. It will be better for all of us in the long run. Trust me."
So, Mr. President, just give it to us straight. We can handle it. Give us your idea and we'll either accept it or reject it. But, please don't play us for fools by telling us something that simply doesn't make sense.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
sh76

I agree -- there's needs to be a real long debate on this issue with all the cards on the table. Someone in the media needs to take charge here and make sure this happens.
This means that the media needs to minimize any distractions. Stuff like the Gates arrest, Obama's birth certificate, Sarah Palin's ambitions, C Street's "family" values, Pete Rose, Michael Vick, and anything involving Dick Cheney.

The day investigative journalism sells ratings will be the day our media changes for the better.
What we need are GOOD teachers in public schools who know how to get our kids interested.

No seriously, universal health care could be cheaper if properly implemented, though it might take a few years to reap the (financial) benefits.
