The world has become much smaller than it was 50 years ago.
No, Earth hasn’t shrunk, but it’s population has increased and it’s easier and cheaper to move around over larger distances.
So, the mobility of people and the volume of mobile people increases, meaning that many of the “it’s been like that for 100’s of years” situations are constantly changing.
Why Americans, in particular, don’t get this is beyond comprehension. I mean, they’ve only been “stable” since the 1920’s or so. Before that it was constant movement and expansion. Perhaps it’s because of this, they have a hunkering for “stability” ?
Anyhoo… one of the major problems facing humanity in the West is housing. The financial incentive is to build very expensive houses, but the need in society is the complete opposite: loads of cheaper housing. And the housing has to be suited for the migratory patterns as well.
It’s not rocket science. This has been known since the 1980’s.
And what happened? Governments did not invest in the needed housing, and now we’re blaming tourists, refugees and foreigners for the housing shortage.
And which political parties does this play into the hands of?
Indeed.
And their solution: less foreigners.
And that’s not a solution to the problem.

Tourism is a problem in some parts of the world. When too many people try to be on a small patch of "Paradise" it turns fast into a place nobody wants to be.

Well, if I wanted to build more housing on MY property, I would have to apply for a permit. And I will be turned down because 'accessory dwelling units' are not allowed in my area. My area is zoned 'single-family homes,' so if I tried to flaut the law and build without a permit, some neighbor would report/sue me - and win.
Now integrate. Much of the US is in exactly the same situation. Governments have passed laws preventing most people from building low-cost housing which they would be happy to rent out to students or single people or let grandma live in.
So are the laws that prevent housing from being built "socialist" or "capitalist"?
