I am form it. it has been estimated that it cost the taxpayers $100,000 per year to feed cloth and shelter a prisoner. multiply that by millions and you see my delema. On the other hand not to be sininister A smith and wesson revolver can be purchased for $200 ans a box of 200 rounds can be purchased for $40 so we can execute some 200 major scum bags for a little less than $250 saving taxpayers billions and ridding the world of the undesirables.

Except that people are never executed without being kept on death row for many years thereby costing the taxpayer millions of dollars anyway...

I'm against. How can Americans accept capital punishment based on their judgement whilst abhor the acts of terrorists based on their judgement ???
(However, I believe that people like rapists, for example, should have their balls chopped off).

Listen to yourself. Why do Americans condemn terrorist attacks? Terrorists kill innocent people, take innocent lives. Capital punishment rids the Earth of a convicted killer. If your mother was killed in cold blood, would you still be against the death penalty? If you say put him in prison for life, would you be willing to pay his cable bills? Buy him books? Buy his weights? No you wouldn't. Need I say more?

what are the arguments for the daeth penalty? As I see it they are:
1)to save money on housing convicts
2)as a deterent to others not to commit the same crime
3)as revenge for the crime

Except that:
1)People on death row cost a fortune in legal bills as they run endless appeals, all paid for by the state. Death row accomidation i also more expensive. After 10 years of this they might be executed, but by then they have cost more than they would have done in 30+ years of normal prison.
2) I have never seen any evidence that the death penalty works as a deterant, certainly not that it works as a better deterent than other punishments. People who commit crimes worthy of the death penalty don't care about the concequences - for a start they didn't intend to get caught.
3) are we justified in killing someone to get our revenge & make ourselves feel better? Isn't that lowering ourselves to their level? And the problem with killig people is that it's pretty hard to appologuise if you later realise that they were innocent.

Hey Belg,

You are thinking way too much.

The purpose is to kill them.

So that they are no more.

Revenge, money and deterance? I think not.

We just need to get rid of their genetic pattern. The idiot got caught.

Chimps don't need that kind of fool around.

(I'll let you guess as to the degree of seriousness here.)

If my nephew who is intellectually handicapped and had an extremely unfortunate upbringing was to kill someone (whether innocently or accidently) then I would fight for him to avoid capital punishment. How about the thousands of innocent Iraqi's who have died because America decided that invading was justified whilst condeming terrorism. How many more terrorists has America created ???

I personally feel that society can only gove a punishment that is 100% final if they are 100% confident in the legal system.

I do not have this confidence, particually having sat on a jury.

You can not give someone their life back if you make a mistake, if society murders an innocent person are they not guilty of murder as well?
