What are peoples views on the destruction of tropical rain forests? It worries me because up to 75 species of animal and plant are becoming extinct every day. That adds up to over 27,000 every year. The main reason for these extinctions is tropical forest destruction. Is this avoidable or just part of our evolving world?

Don't ask me why, but that's generally to blame for everything that's going wrong around here lately!

who do the capitalists blame?
i seem to remember a capitalist i know blaming evolution!
if this is normal then who do the evolutionists blame?

It's just that the capitalists in favor of cutting down the rain forests feel the benefits of doing so outweigh the problems. This is something I am unsure about myself, especially since I live in a country that has been made more wealthy and comfortable and powerful for doing the exact same thing.

Brazil is a very impoverished nation. It's difficult to get jobs, etc. etc.
They also have so much debt that the government has difficulties setting up programs to help the poor.
Trees are easy targets and they bring up a lot of money.
Another problem is that rainforests generally grow on very infertile land. So, the trees get cut to make a profit and so that farmers can grow crops. But since the land is very infertile, they need to move on year after year, causing more trees to be chopped down.
Now, if the West (Europe, America and Australia) would cancel their debts, the country could invest in the poor and the farming community and come to some sensible alternatives.
As it stands though, the IMF and the world bank (read: the US administration) don't like the Brazilian government (left wing) and won't help out until Brazil does what the IMF wants. Even then, like in Argentina, it's only going to benefit the rich in the long run and screw the poor (their taxes will have to pay off the even greater debt the country will be in).
That's capitalism for you...

tourism outweighs paper pulping for money ... but that is a different industry ...it is done to keep the money in the same industry .... it is to "claim ground" from the old growth ... for the plantation and farming industry.
if there is a patch of ground with young regrowth trees, ready to harvest and make paper with .... and a patch of beautiful oldgrowth forest ... then the old growth will be destroyed as quickly as possible.
the industry has a massive fear: ... some stage in the future an international body with teeth may stop them from destroying the oldgrowth forests, so they slash and burn as fast as possible so there is nothing left to claim .. and they are left with land to use.
i bet brazil is similar, they may say the new ground can only be used once ... maybe sometimes this is true .... but it is in their selfish best interest to open the new ground.
Most of it is cut down to grow soya which is used to feed livestock or add protein to food for the western market. This is an interesting article on the subject. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/foodmonthly/story/0,9950,1342291,00.html
what can we do ? eat less meat & processed food, & choose more organically farmed items could be a start.

that might concern me.
But first tell me the names that went extinct today.
In latin. Thanks.
Then tell me the 120 that mutated into existence today. And which will survive. Which happens EVERY DAY... FOR THE PAST 3 BILLION YEARS.
Until the next 'extinction'.
Which will be the same as all the other 'great extinctions'.
Volcano. Astroid. Comet.
Sigh.
Why are we so important now as to ignore all of time? All that has and will continue to happen to us?
