There have been some rumours going around among Russian, Indian and Chinese scientists entailing that the US Mars missions were in fact missions to cover up the fact that Americans landed on Mars to prepare and execute Top Secret biological and military tests, that are too dangerous for life on earth in general and human beings in particular to perform here on Earth. They chose Mars to execute these tests because the Marsian athmosphere resembles the Earth's environmental conditions.
Some pictures made on Mars published by Nasa seem to show impressions of shoes belonging to the astronauts's spacesuits.
After they've installed the necessary scientific equipment, energy installations and communication facilities, they will return to Earth. After their departure NASA will start the experiments.
I have not been able to find anything yet on the internet so far. The search continues.

It is indeed outrageous, but I've heard more incredible things that turned out to be true.
