LONDON, June 17 (Reuters) - Iran wants the ability to build nuclear weapons to gain the reputation of a major power in the Middle East, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog said in a BBC interview broadcast on Wednesday.
Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Iran sees nuclear weapons as an "insurance policy" against perceived threats from neighbouring countries or the United States.

Without the Israeli nukes, Iran is more easily persuaded to stop their nuke program.
I'm glad you think this is a charming idea though. And I agree. A world without nuclear weapons is a better world.

Well, first of all Israel must get rid of their nukes. Because if they don't, Iran want to have theirs.

If you think that Israel getting rid of its nukes would cause Iran to stop its pursuit, I believe you are being quite gullible. First of all, Iran has never even been in a direct war with Israel ("direct" as opposed to through its proxies). Israel is not going to invade Iran and has no interest in attacking it (other than, perhaps, to stop it from developing nukes, making it a catch-22). Second, Iran wants to be able to neutralize the USA and, yes, the EU as well.
Iran will not drop their nuclear program unless forced to (or somehow convinced to through a combination of threats and bribes).

If getting rid of all nukes forever were possible, it would be a great idea. But, when everyone has the incentive to keep the last ones for themselves, I don't see how you're going to get rid of them all together.

Furthermore - Israel is a country without supervision from IAEA, they have not signed the NPT treaty. Therefore they are in the same league as North Korea. Do we trust Israel, in the light what they're doing to the Palestinians? I say no.
It would be a good start if Israel got rid of their nukes first, and let IAEA in, and then sign the NPT treaty. Then we can force Iran to do the same. Not before.
