I won the election which means the people want me to implement my plans!

It means that in the US the people never get what they want. The only way to prevent this is to have what we have now, power divided. Power divided means that no one can carry out what they want, which is what the people really want.

Do we want Obama's Socialist agenda? No

Do we want a country that is out of control financially and is unwilling to raise taxes to pay for its debts? No

Neither Republican nor Democrat gets it. Or if they do get it, they don't care. In either case, at no time is the government going to represent the will of the people.

The government is simply being run by either Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum, which ever is least unpopular with the people at the moment.

I think I'd leap a bit to the right instead of to the left.

In the end, I think we'd end up with a different dog, but same fleas.

I don't want power divided. I want all Democrats (or Greens) and no Republicans. I want the country to move as far to the left as is possible.

Yes, the Green party would be my first choice.

Well, you're nearly there.
However, it's no tweedle pulling the strings...

So abolish the two-party system. If enough people want it, it will happen.

I'm proud of you. You've come a long way. 😉

In all seriousness, though, there certainly are some benefits of divided power in that compromise is mandated, but at the same time a tendency toward the median will by definition stifle innovative policies (full disclosure: I wasn't the first person here to mention this fact, even if I can't remember to whom I should give credit). It's a give-and-take.

Shav,

Yep, the modern version of the East India Company still dictates how the Western governments function. We in the West are puppets of the super rich, case in point: the Great Oil Wars.

The best way we can keep them in check is to elect a mixed government where the politicians are too busy fighting each other to carry out any grand scheme.

Kaz,

This isn't simply a problem with the two party system. See my response to Shav.

Witty,

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you are going to fight wars you need to increase taxation to pay for the wars! How we can think that we can fight wars and not raise taxes to pay for them is beyond me. It takes GW thinking to believe that a government can simply increase its obligations and never raise the funds to pay for them.

No, we just need to keep our government divided. I prefer a liberal President with conservative House and Senate. Of course when Supreme Court justices need to be replaced, then we can throw in a conservative President.
