Yes. The U.S. Constitution was a conspiracy by the Masons to keep people in power by putting their jobs up for a vote every 2,4 or 6 years.

The conflicting statements in this thread flummox me. I see posts championing protection of the minority right, “this way a minority party strong in a few states is able to make some national presence” and others decrying the diminution of the majority “the majority who live by the coast lose political power” by people who otherwise agree.

Your Republic has been the ideal of the world. Scholars have lauded the fabricators of your system, for two centuries, as being genius in ability. Now you think you have a better idea? I dare say those gentlemen knew more about democracy, republicanism and what type system allowed fairest representation of ALL citizens than any of you do. It could not have been an over-sight they chose to avoid mobocracy.

I'm on your side of this argument (or at least undecided), but I am trying to research the opposition's position.

The opposition position is that the vote is rigged.

Well, Tinfoil hattery can't be debated so if I were you, I'd just let them have their opinion.

The desire for a direct vote without the electoral college is hardly tinfoil hattery.

Thinking every election for the last 200+ years has been rigged, is.

Well, 'rigged' was my term, and I don't hate the electoral system. Let's assume that this was a poor choice of words.

I don't think they thought the President would have enough power that he'd want to stay in office. For over 100 years, no President even attempted to run for a third term. The expansion of Executive Power is largely a 20th Century development; the Framers having lived under a king were most anxious to limit Presidential powers. Most thought that the Electoral College would result in the election usually going to the House of Representatives.

You wouldn't really want a true democracy would you?
True mob-rule?

That's why the US is a Republic and not a Democracy, and simultaneously why the very ignorant populace (that the electorate college protects us from) *thinks* we're a Democracy.

Think about the implications of majority rule.
Tell your bro to read Plato's Republic if he wants a nice lay-out of the various types of governments.
