It is a slow day in a little Greek/Irish/Spanish/Italian (Take your pick) Village .
The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted.
Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit.

On this particular day, a rich German/French (Again take your pick) tourist is driving through the
village, stops at the local hotel and lays a €100 note on the desk,
telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to
pick one to spend the night.
The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked
upstairs, the hotelier grabs the €100 note and runs next door to pay his
debt to the butcher.
The butcher takes the €100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt
to the pig farmer.
The pig farmer takes the €100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the
supplier of feed and fuel.

The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the €100 note and runs to pay his
drinks bill at the Pub.

The publican slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the
bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him
"services" on credit.

The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the
hotel owner with the €100 note.
The hotel proprietor then places the €100 note back on the counter so the
at that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the €100
note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and
leaves town.

No one produced anything.
No one earned anything.
However, the whole village is now out of debt and looking to the future
with a lot more optimism.

Welcome Turkey & any other none European country's to what is the teat to all fiscal troubles.

Am I on my own in thinking that it is about time we all got back behind our boaders and stuck to our own currency made our own laws like it was before the Euro and Brussels - unt zee directives?

Yes, this is an old one.

The only major problem with it is that everyone on your list has a neutral balance sheet and so are not really in debt.

If countries like Greece and Spain and Portugal really had neutral balance sheets, everything would be okay. To compare this example to real life, the pig farmer, for example, would have to have €6,000 in other debts besides his €100 debt to the feed and fuel supplier.

Edit: And there would have to be 5 new people in the example that don't work and expect to live off of taxation of the pig farmer and hotel owner, etc.

And the people who were born with billions who don't work either and think it's a good thing that the peasants can't pay their bills - it shows their natural inferiority.

It's a little different here in the US. Of course, everyone here is in debt and lives on credit as well, however, there are a few differences.

First the government creates legislation that forces spending more than it takes in every year. So then it goes and begs other governments to lend it money. Then when they get the money and get their fix they crave they go and pass more legislation that causes them to further go into debt, at which point they go and beg for more money to borrow. Then when they get that money and get another fix they crave they go and pass more legislation to spend even more money. At this point no one wishes to lend the US any more money, so they begin buying their own debt via the Fed. Then they take care of that debt by buying it, they get yet another fix and then they proceed to go and pass more legislation to spend even more money.

I would continue, but don't wish to spoil the ending even though its pretty self explainatory as to how it will turn out. As for the tourist, he refuses to convert his pounds into dollars due to inflationary reasons. That's OK though because the hotel manager, farmer, butcher, pig farmer, publican, and prostitute all prefer any currency other than the dollar. So they then all take their pounds and convert them to dollars and pay off more of their debt than they have in years!!

Really, the two systems are not far apart in my opinion. All the US needs now is more tourists I suppose.

Sorry, if they all prefer any currency other than the Dollar why would they convert to it? They don't all have pounds...They have Euro's!!!
